GOING TO HEAVEN?
February 27, 2009

The only way to get to Heaven is by being perfect.  But you say, "Nobobdy's perfect!"  That is exactly right and the precise reason why nobody will enter heaven based upon anything they have done or haven't done.  The Bible says that everyone has sinned and has fallen short of God's perfect standards. (Romans 3.23)  Many people  believe they are basically good people because they compare their standard against other people's standards instead of God's standard.  You might say, "Well, what is God's standard?"  It is spelled out in the Ten Commandments and the Bible describes the Law of the Lord as being perfect and saving the soul. (Psalm 19.7)

God's Word reveals to us that we stand guilty before Him.  Every one of us has broken God's perfect law by lying, stealing, cheating, and basically living to please ourselves.  Maybe you have never killed anyone but the reality is that the Bible informs us that if we break one commandment we are guilty of breaking them all. (James 2.10)  So if we measure ourselves against God's standard we find that we all stand guilty before Him.  God's commandments were given to "break" us show us that we can't rely on our own goodness.  Since God is Holy he cannot overlook our sins and He must punish lawbreakers.  Judges and officials who simply overlook wrongdoing and lawbreakers are called corrupt and injust.  God is absolutely forced to punish sinners because of His perfect, righteous character demands justice.

Since God is the Creator of man, He gets to make the rules.  The Bible says that the wages of sin is death. (Romans 6.23)  That means that we have earned the penalty of eternal separation from God in a place of punishment call Hell. (Matthew 25.41)  People who refuse to acknowledge their selfish ways and repent of their sins will be ruined forever in their sinful state.  You may be thinking, "Man, I am in trouble!"  You're right, it is bad news, but that is exactly why Jesus came to earth.  Jesus came to save sinners from eternal ruin. (John 3.16-17)

The mission of Jesus is called the "gospel" which literally means good news.  The good news is that even while we were still sinners and powerless to change ourselves, Jesus died to pay the penalty of our sins.  (Romans 5.8)  The Bible says that if you would believe, that means place your trust and dependence that Jesus came to save you then you will be saved. (Romans 10.9-10)  When you agree with God that you deserve to be separated from Him and could never deserve Heaven that is salvation.  Jesus came to offer people a personal relationship with the living God, not some lifeless religion of rules and regulations.  Salvation is a gift for the guilty!  So turn from trying to find your own goodness and start trusting in God and His goodness demonstrated to you thru Jesus.
